Biography and Background:
Cheryl Nelan owns and operates CMIT Solutions of Monroe, providing IT services to small and mid-sized businesses. Cheryl's focus is helping business owners make well-informed decisions on their technology and providing them a superior level of support - like what is typically reserved for larger organizations. In short, she works to make technology productive for her clients so they can focus on their own businesses. Prior to owning CMIT Solutions, Cheryl spent over 20 years driving growth in highly competitive markets for large, global corporations in the Rochester area. She holds a M.B.A. from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a B.S. Degree in Management (with a computer science minor) from the State University of New York at Geneseo. She lives in Rochester with her 15 year old son, Royce and is engaged to marry Evan Stein later this year. She enjoys outdoor activities with her family, especially hiking, camping, skiing, and anything involving the ocean.
How have you personally helped advance your company's channel business over the past year?
I own and operate our business. We grew our business 50% year over year from 2015 to 2016. I drive a culture where our team takes responsibility for our clients' success and we grow by serving our clients well. I am the primary sales person for the business and I focus our efforts on growing our channel by finding the clients that are the best fit for our services and listening to their needs. I also own the primary relationship with our partners so we are continuing to bring the best-in-class solutions to our clients.
What are your goals for your company's channel business over the next year?
We plan on 25% growth this year - but more importantly, we focus on keeping our clients happy. We use the Net Promoter Score to measure our success and we look to continuously improve - by listening to our clients and providing the best service we can. The best way we grow is by retaining our existing clients, exceeding their expectations, and having them become our raving fans - we grow by referrals!
What honors, awards or commendations have you won over the past year?
CMIT Mastermind Group of the Year - Many CMIT offices are in various mastermind groups - our group earned this distinction by showing the highest percent growth for our team members. Webster Chamber Business of the Month - we were honored by our local chamber for our commitment to the community. Many, many client accolades...
Outside of your family, please name a woman you admire and why:
Hillary Clinton - She stood above it all when her husband was our President. She always stayed focused on what was important - not only for her but for her family and the country. She brought this forth in her own political career and took the high road in a very controversial presidential campaign. She stayed focused on the issues at hand and did an amazing job not falling prey to the slander that was all around her.
What advice would you give to young women who want to begin careers in technology?
Never let someone tell you what you can't do. Always prove them wrong. Women bring tremendous skills to the technology industry - from the technical skills required to code or manage technology to the personal and communication skills required to excel in everything we do. Use the skills you have and see what an advantage they can be.
If you could be any movie character for one day in real life, who would you be and why?
Princess Leia - She's smart and she knows it. She brings to the screen an extremely strong female character who runs a rebellion and an empire while she shows her softer side as well...
If you could travel to a city you've never been to before, all expenses paid, where would you go and why?
Singapore - One city where many cultures blend.
