Lead with questions
"The best way to connect with someone is to get interested in who they are," says Terri Trespicio, author of Take the Work Out of Networking. "Just ask yourself, what am I curious about? What would I like to learn about this person? And let one question feed another."

This holds true for a new boss or for a new client, a familiar collaborator or your cubicle neighbor; people generally love being asked questions, especially when it's about a topic they know well. Your honest curiosity about their stories builds another layer of trust and connection, as does your ability to listen and reflect back their answers.
